Los proyectos

So I'm going to go over the main projects we're doing here. Woohoo!

Abriendo Horizontes-Fundacion ProEd

We started this project before we even got to Panama. Abriendo Horizontes is a program by Fundacion ProEd where 14-16 Indigenous Panamanian students will be funded by the US Department of State to go to Missouri for pre-college training (they leave 1/6). These students are underprivileged and have lived in hot tropics their entire lives, so Monica, Rina, and I collected winter clothes while still back in the U.S. for these students. We all have the best friends and family members ever, because we collected more than enough winter clothes to donate to these students and were able to ship them successfully (THANK YOU to everyone who donated).

Now, these students will be arriving 1/5 and Monica, Rina, and I will be providing the winter clothes and also giving workshops to these students. In these workshops, we will administer the TOEFL exam to see where their english skills are at, teach them about the US ("cultural adaptation"), phrases they SHOULD know that may not be in the textbook...basically, we're going to be living travel guides. It's insane to imagine these students having lived in tiny, indigenous villages their entire lives and now going to a large university in the states. They will most definitely be in awe.

The workshops will go on through to 1/6, and then we will be hosting a farewell dinner for them that night.

TOEFL Prep Course

Mon, Rins, & I will be English teaching assistants for English/TOEFL-preparation courses being held at Universidad Tecnologica de Panama. We'll be in the language labs, working individually with students of as groups, depending completely on the students and the teacher(s) we're assisting. Our schedule will be:

Class 10am-12pm
Lunch
Class 2pm-4:30pm
Enrichment Hour 4:30pm-6pm
Enrichment Hour is where students will sign up with us and we will have sessions going over whatever the student wants, whether it be speaking, reading, going over an essay, etc.

Estudiantes Apoyando Estudiantes-Fundacion ProEd

This was the school clean-up I already talked about that we already did, but I figured we would put it in. Also, we may be helping to build a net around the top of a playground/basketball court at the Maria Josefa Torrijos to help solve a pigeon problem that they have.

Otros posibilidades

A trail clean-up!

Soo...that's the work! But honestly, I don't even consider that real work. I mean, it will be hard...but really, really cool at the same time.

I'll list the fun stuff we have planned later!

Muchos abrazos!
